Who would need to make a New Year’s resolution if they really wanted to accomplish something? Every year, millions of people promise themselves that this year they are going to the gym and are going to work on their muscle growth. Every year millions of people don’t follow through.
It’s not really that you don’t want to get fit. It’s that you confuse fitness with hard work. That’s why you don’t keep your fitness vow. As soon as you think about it, you think of hard work. It doesn’t have to be that way, though.
If you like pumping iron, that’s one thing, but if you don’t, that’s quite another. What you need to do is to find a way to get fit that you enjoy. Then it’s easy.
Do whatever it is you like to do. If it happens to be swimming, then go swimming. However, don’t make swimming your ‘resolve.’ Just go for a leisurely swim. If you find yourself tempted to force yourself to swim twenty laps, lower the limit to one or two. After you’ve finished two laps, you’ll probably want to do more. Go ahead if you want to, but be sure you leave the pool happy and looking forward to your next swim – not grimly determined.
This fitness strategy runs counter to what’s taught in most of the fitness manuals, but it works. An example of how it can work for you is jogging. Millions of people either quit jogging or never take it up because they think they’ve got to push their limits. Next time you’re out walking, jog a few yards every once in awhile. Before long, you’ll string all those short jogs into one long jog and you’ll enjoy it.
Cycling is something almost everybody enjoys. If you’re just taking it up, don’t think you have to go out and buy a Schwinn mountain bike. Just take a leisurely ride around the park on a rental bike a few times. You’ll soon be addicted and then you can go out and buy a bike.
Don’t fall into the trap of buying dozens of diet supplements, either. You won’t need anything more than an herbalifeline until you’re really pushing your limits. Eat balanced meals. That’s all you need.
So you see, getting fit isn’t a matter of gritting your teeth, setting your jaw and forcing yourself to work out. Fitness should be fun, even from the beginning. Later, when you really are fit, it will just become more fun. There’s no need for a New Year’s resolution. Just go out and have fun!
