Walk into any toy shop and will find an array of airsoft guns that looks just like real weapons. This super realistic aspect makes these weapons very popular with children as well as grown ups, and sales thereof have sky rocketed in the last few years.
Initially these guns were produced to be used in sport where competitors engage in realistic situations and scenarios designed to give the players that adrenalin rush they are after. The mechanics of these guns differ quite a lot from real weapons, in that the propellant used to fire a bullet can never be gun powder.
Some of these airsoft guns use compressed air, some sort of gas or even springs to shoot the bullets. The velocity at which these bullets travel is determined by the way the gun works.
The most popular version of these guns use propane gas to fire them. A canister inside the gun must be filled with compressed propane in order to keep the weapon working. The propane gas has a unique smell to it once fired, and some players claim that this smells just like gun powder being fired.
Smoke produced by a special cap which you insert into the weapon also mimics real gun smoke coming from a fired barrel. Just like real guns, people know that the gun in question was fired when this white smoke emerges.
Propane gas expands at a tremendous rate when released from compression. This force drives the bullet through the barrel of the gun at mind boggling speeds. It is no wonder that the less powerful spring loaded weapons are loosing ground to the propane models as people want super strong firing power.
These weapons can hold various magazines which in their turn can hold a certain amounts of bullets. Some weapons need to be reloaded after every shot whilst others sport semi automatic status.
Although these toys are quite harmless, the real danger lies in the fact that you and I will not be able to tell the difference between the toy and real gun. It is only when you lift the weapon that the huge difference in weight tells you which is which.
Criminals exploit this factor as they are using these fake guns in more armed robberies every day. Unfortunately no one can tell that they are being held up with a fake weapon, so people tend to handle such scenarios as the real deal.
Strangely enough, the main manufacturers of these weapons, namely Japan, launched very strict laws on the selling and use of the look-a-likes as they became aware of the criminal uses these weapons could be put to. However this did not stop them from flooding the world market with these toys.
Many accidents with airsoft guns have left children blinded when they were allowed to play with them without a parent being present. Do not be fooled, these guns are really dangerous for children.
Despite all the negativity, manufacturers can not make enough of these weapons as world wide demand is growing daily.
