Question:

I have recently begun using a stair machine for fat loss. I have found that the front half of both feet and all my toes fall asleep and go completely numb after about 15 minutes! The shoes are new, the toe box seems wide enough, and the shoes are flexible. Any ideas as to what the cause might be? 

Answer:

While stair machine (and elliptical trainer) are both excellent for cardiovascular training and fat loss, numbness in the toes and feet is a very common problem with the stair machine and the elliptical trainer. It is a lack of circulation from the constant pressure put on the feet and has really nothing to do with your shoes.

You know how your arms falls asleep if you lean on it for too long? The same thing is happening in your feet and toes. I’ve encountered this situation myself before.

There are several good solutions to this problem.

1. Take a break every 10 minutes just to shake out your feet and get circulation moving again. Step off the machine to do this then jump right back on. 

Most stair machines have pause programming built in so when you’re not on the machine, it’ll actually stop the program and let you jump back on and pick up right where you left off.

2. Lift your feet off the pedals every few minutes while you are using the stair machine. Taking a few steps off the stair machine pedals every few minutes or so should do the trick. To do this, when you’re pushing down with the left foot, lift the right foot off and move your foot around and vice versa.

This is an easy way to keep your foot circulation going while still keeping yourself going on the stair machine.

These two methods should help you avoid the numbness in your feet completely and allow you to persue your fat loss goals.

Just as an aside, if losing fat fast is your main goal, I highly recommend interval training to be your main method of cardio.  It’s more intense than straight-through cardio and will actually help solve your numbness issues by breaking up the steady pressure on your feet.

 

Youth soccer drills

It is almost certain that young players enjoy playing soccer the most when they are able to score maximum goals. The youth soccer drills in practice sessions should therefore include lots of opportunities for them to practice scoring.

Use small sided games, full field scrimmages, and shooting drills to create opportunities for them. It’s better to keep diverging the process in kids soccer drills, when performing small sided games and full field scrimmages.

You also have the choice to add games that can be played without a goalkeeper or where a goalie’s movement can be restricted within given boundaries. You can add more goals or widen the ones that are previously in use for the purpose of enhancing the chances of scoring more goals.

With time, as players become competent in shooting techniques and its tactical knowledge, the possibility of scoring more goals arises. Like passing skills, players should be educated on shooting techniques early in their career. These can be afterwards emphasized more when the player is in the later stages of his development.

In youth soccer practice, one of the most effective ways to improve shooting skills is through using drills. In order to effectively score goals, shooting drills help in developing shooting skills of the players. But the player’s shooting skills should always be developed progressively.

Following series can be incorporated in youth soccer drills to make them suitable for developing player’s shooting drills;

1. Stationery ball being shot by a stationery player.

2.  A moving player shooting a still ball.

3. A stationary player shooting a moving ball.

4. A moving player being shot by a moving player.

Youth soccer coaching should involve teaching the players to kick the ball effectively while shooting. A lot of players have the tendency to take shots from the close range using the inside of their feet. This has the effect of enhancing the shooting accuracy.

In circumstances where it is important to shoot with power, make the players use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. Their toes should be downwards and the ankles should be locked.

Elevation of the shoot is also affected by the placement of the non-kicking foot. Teach the players that they should keep their non-kicking foot a little ahead of the ball. This will keep the shot low. Try to keep the players focused on striking the ball. You can remove all the distracting equipment such as players and balls so that they focus better.

As the players keep progressing on their shooting skills, raise the bar so that their growth continues. For instance, as their shooting improves, throw balls at various speeds.

Now get out there and start including youth soccer drills relevant to shooting in your daily practice sessions with the players.
