Have you noticed that people in villages are fit and trim while city folks are overweight? It’s true. The village folk are up early in the morning. There are the cattle to be taken care of, the crops to be watered, the fence to be mended, the cattle shed to be cleaned, and the roof to be patched and so on. There are small and big things to be done all through the day. It requires stretching, walking, bending, carrying weights, jumping and exerting strength. The calorie gets burnt all through the day. The muscles are well used. A good night’s rest recoups the energy. The food is cooked at home from vegetables and grain grown in the farm or brought from the local bazaar. All through the day, the mind and body are active.
Compare this with the city life. We are up very early. Right from preparation of food to carrying out house hold chores, there are a host of gadgets that prevent us from exerting physically. We hardly walk, run or climb stairs. Our life is taken care of by a host of devices that keeps us comfortable and in luxury. Yet our life is stressed. We eat a lot of junk food for that is what we get easily. We know we have to change our diet to stay fit even if we do not have the time to do physical workout.
A variety of diet programs are available from the experts. The aim of these programs is to lose weight as well as maintain health. There are diet programs that give an elaborate plan on the kind of diet one must strictly follow. These are often difficult to follow in the busy urban life. Some diet programs do not prescribe strict regimen but offer a diet that one can easily adapt to different conditions. Jon Benson, for instance, has developed such a program called Every Other Day Diet which prescribes diet to be followed on alternate days. One is free to eat what one can on other days.
We continue the way we are. No great changes in the daily routine except for some modifications which can be easily followed. We get to lose some weight and also have a healthy life. Such a program is indeed something that is the most accommodating.
Being healthy does good to ourselves. By doing so, we are able to avoid illnesses and live life well.
